DMIC’s Mega Projects: Why Dholera is the Most Important Smart City

Dholera The Major Nodal Project of DMICDC

The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is designed to be one of the most important projects concerning infrastructure in India. The goal behind this project was to improve the industrial development in 6 states of India. This also includes a high-speed industrial zone that covers a distance of 1504 km. Moreover, this zone is strategically positioned near the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). By constructing the DMIC, the movement of goods will become faster, the level of manufacturing will increase, and investments will be attracted from all over the world.

DMIC Phase 1: The Eight Key Nodal Projects

For the very first Phase of DMIC, the government has planned for and located eight key investment nodes for the development of industries and specific urban areas. The investment nodes will be constructed around smart cities and will be ecological and technological-driven construction smart industries.

1. Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad Investment Region (Uttar Pradesh)

With seamless connectivity to major expressways, this region will focus on electronics, IT, and logistics industries. Therefore, this region is strategically positioned close to Delhi and Noida, which makes it an ideal location for the Industrial and Logistics Hub.

2. Manesar-Bawal Investment Region (Haryana)

These two zones Manesar and Bawal are industrial zones and are already developed. With proximity to NH-48, these zones are set to become a global center for manufacturing and delivering automotive, machinery, and consumer goods to the market.

3. Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana Investment Region (Rajasthan)

The development under DMIC will focus on expanding the manufacturing sectors, such as automotive, engineering, and consumer electronics, in this cluster which is part of the growing industrial belt of Rajasthan where many Japanese and multinational companies are located.

4. Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow Investment Region (Madhya Pradesh)

This node will greatly enhance the industrial development in Madhya Pradesh. This region will focus on automotive, textiles, and engineering industries while taking advantage of its central positioning to service a multitude of markets throughout India.

5. Ahmedabad-Dholera Investment Region (Gujarat) – The Flagship Project

Dholera is unique and eclipses the other nodes because it is projected to be the largest and most advanced smart city planned under DMIC. Dholera, set to span 920 square kilometers, is proposed to be:

  • India’s initial green eco-friendly industrial smart city
  • An industrial and trade worldwide center with first-world amenities
  • A city with uninterrupted integrated express road, metro rail, and international airport city for multi-mode transport
  • A city with effective renewable energy, advanced infrastructure, efficient climate control, and a self-sufficient water resource management system for sustainable development.
  • Dholera is becoming the focus of international investors’ attention due to its market-friendly policies, ease of business investments, and planned people-oriented social infrastructure comprising residential, educational, and healthcare facilities.

6. Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Area (Maharashtra)

This industrial node is a portion of Aurangabad Industrial City {AURIC} that was supposed to be a hub for manufacturing and services. The area is planned to have residential townships integrated with industries to create a futuristic ‘walk-to-work’ environment.

7. Dighi Port Industrial Area (Maharashtra)

Dighi is set to become a port-based industrial center concentrating on logistics, shipbuilding, and other exports. With its proximity to Mumbai and JNPT Port, this node will serve to enhance the country’s trade performance.

8. Jodhpur-Pali-Marwar Industrial Region (Rajasthan)

This region hopes to exploit the abundant natural resources of the state with industries based on ceramics, handicrafts, and mining. The intention is to modernize traditional industries and make them more efficient by introducing new approaches and technology.

What Makes Dholera the Most Important Project in DMIC?

Out of all the 8 nodes, The Dholera Special Investment Region, or DSR as it’s commonly known shines the best due to its investment opportunities and untapped potential. Some key reasons why Dholera is the flagship project of DMIC include:

  • Largest Smart City: Surpassing Singapore, Dholera is the largest smart city covering an area of 920 square kilometers. It is the largest among all DMIC projects.
  • Planned International Airport: To aid in further development and connectivity, Dholera will have a greenfield international airport along with the smart city.
  • The city is at an important crossroads as it is situated 100 km away from Ahmedabad which is well connected by roads, railways, and seaports.
  • With the city’s focus being on 100% renewable energy, it will be India’s first city to adopt a fully integrated solar and wind power infrastructure.
  • Investors can take advantage of the pre-approved land parcels through Plug and Play tools, smart utilities, and even advanced industrial zones.

Conclusion

The DMIC is a catalyst in the growth of India’s industrial and economic development. Phase 1 of the project aims to capture employment through the eight nodal projects and help India become a global hub for manufacturing.
