A Major Boost to Regional Connectivity
Contents
The Central Government has officially approved the development of a 65-kilometre railway line between Bhavnagar and Dholera, a move set to transform connectivity across Gujarat’s Saurashtra region. This project is expected to bridge a crucial transport gap by providing a direct rail link between Bhavnagar—a key port and industrial city—and Dholera, which is emerging as a global investment hub under the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).

Strategic Importance of the Project
The railway line holds immense strategic value. Dholera is envisioned as India’s first and largest smart industrial city, part of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). As industries such as semiconductors, electronics, and renewable energy set up operations in Dholera, seamless transport becomes vital. The new railway line will not only serve passenger traffic but also strengthen freight connectivity, helping industries in the region move raw materials and finished goods more efficiently.
Economic and Industrial Growth
By linking Bhavnagar port directly with Dholera, the railway line is expected to reduce transportation costs and timelines for industries. Bhavnagar, already known for its ship-breaking yards, salt, and diamond polishing industry, will now gain a direct logistical advantage. Similarly, companies setting up plants in Dholera can easily access the port for exports. This synergy will accelerate industrial development in Gujarat and attract fresh domestic and foreign investments into the DSIR.
Passenger Benefits and Regional Development
For passengers, the railway line will provide an alternate, faster, and more convenient mode of transport between Bhavnagar and Dholera. Currently, road transport dominates travel between the two cities, but rail will offer a cost-effective and comfortable option. Beyond passengers, this link will also support social and economic integration by improving access to education, healthcare, and jobs across regions. Smaller towns and villages along the route are expected to benefit significantly through increased trade, mobility, and employment opportunities.
Supporting the Dholera International Airport
The approval of this project comes at a critical time when the Dholera Greenfield International Airport is under construction and slated for completion by December 2025. Once operational, the railway line will serve as an essential feeder, connecting Bhavnagar and nearby regions to the airport. This integration of air and rail infrastructure will ensure better accessibility for passengers and cargo, further boosting Dholera’s positioning as a global industrial and logistics hub.
Environmental and Sustainable Approach
Railways are among the most sustainable modes of mass transport, and this project aligns well with India’s broader commitment to green infrastructure. With Dholera also designed as a smart, eco-friendly industrial city powered by renewable energy, the railway line complements the region’s long-term vision of sustainable development. Reducing road traffic congestion and emissions, the project is a step toward building a modern, environment-friendly transport ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
With the Centre’s nod, the focus will now shift to speedy execution. Surveys, land acquisition, and construction are expected to begin soon. Once completed, the Bhavnagar–Dholera railway line will stand as a symbol of modern infrastructure fueling regional growth. It will not only connect two key economic centres but also lay the foundation for Gujarat’s next wave of industrial and social transformation.
